Summertime Blues 2015 : Saturday August 29

elvinbishop350

Tonight’s Headliner:
Elvin Bishop

Elvin was born in Glendale, California, and grew up near Elliott, Iowa. At an early age, Elvin started listening to the music of Jimmy Reed, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters through his family radio. Once that music bug bit, Elvin acquired his first guitar and started crafting his blues, R&B, and Rock skills.

In 1959, Bishop attended the University of Chicago and crossed paths with a fellow student Paul Butterfield. Together, they took in the Blues culture surrounding the university campus where legends such as Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Otis Rush, Magic Sam and Howlin’ Wolf performed on a regular basis.

By 1963, Bishop and Butterfield made their first recording, doing a session with veterans Billy Boy Arnold and James Cotton. Shortly after, the two recruited Howlin’ Wolf’s former rhythm section of Sam Lay on drums and Jerome Arnold on bass, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band was born. “In 1965, after adding Mike Bloomfield and Mark Naftalin to the line-up, their revolutionary debut LP was released, opening the door for virtually all the young white Blues bands that followed.”

Bishop stayed for three albums with the Butterfield band, including their innovative East-West release which set the stage for the Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead, among many others.  Elvin released several well-received albums in the early ‘70s, before experiencing his biggest Pop success hit Fooled Around and Fell In Love from his 1976 LP Struttin’ My Stuff.

During the 80s, Elvin toured the continent and eventually went back to the genre which started it all…the blues. In 2008 Elvin joined with Delta Groove Productions which resulted in a Grammy-nominated 2008 CD The Blues Rolls On, and a series of awards, including being named 2009 Male Blues Artist of the Year by Blues Blast magazine.

“In Bishop’s latest release, Red Dog Speaks, the musician leaves no doubt where his heart is, cleverly introducing his long-time cohort “Red Dog” with a gritty slow blues calculated to set the pace for what’s to come. Along the way he smoothly steers the way from strutting Blues and R&B, through a good dose of good-time Rock & Roll, and even an occasional detour through Doo-Wop, Zydeco, and Gospel. Elvin has made plenty of talented friends over the years, and many of them jumped at the chance to help out on Red Dog Speaks; Buckwheat Zydeco, Tommy Castro, Ronnie Baker Brooks, and John Németh all make guest appearances. And all of it adds up to an amalgam that can only be called “Elvin Bishop music.” source: elvinbishopmusic.com

Murray Porter

“Murray Porter’s music has an instantly recognizable sound. The Mohawk piano player from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory brings his culture and history to the masses through his music. With a mix of blues, country, and humor, Porter’s gravelly, soulful voice sings not only of the history and contemporary stories of the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada, but also universal themes of love, lost and found. He has spent over 30 years playing his self-taught unique style of foot-stomping, hand clapping blues piano around the world.”

When not touring, Porter performs at venues all over BC. Whether he is playing an intimate venue for local blues fans, or on a festival stage to thousands of music fans such as the Summertime Blues Festival in Nanaimo, Porter’s love of performing comes across clear and strong in his music.

cjchenier

Tonight’s Headliner: C.J. Chenier

Clayton Joseph Chenier was born September 28, 1957 in Port Arthur, Texas. C.J.’s earliest musical influences were an eclectic mix of funk, soul, jazz and Motown, so naturally his first musical instruments were piano, tenor saxophone and flute. It wasn’t until C.J’s 21st birthday, that he first performed with his famous father Clifton Chenier (the King of Zydeco) and the legendary Red Hot Louisiana band.

While touring, his father showed him what it takes to front a world class touring band, teaching C.J. how to run the family business and how to develop his lifelong passion for music into a career. When Clifton died in 1987, C.J. became the front man of the Red Hot Louisiana Band and recorded his debut album for Arhoolie Records.

“As he told a journalist at the time, he does not try to imitate his father’s playing: “I play it the way I play it. All my father really told me was to do the best I could do with my own style.  In the following years C.J. would record albums Slash Records and the legendary Chicago label Alligator Records.”
